Spring is a festive season in my home, with both of my kids celebrating their birthdays. But there are many more occasions that call for sweet treats, from Mother’s Day and Father’s Day brunches to weddings, picnics, festivals and all the social gatherings parents of school-aged kids have on their calendar.

Now of course it’s perfectly fine to enjoy a slice of birthday or wedding cake. But maybe you have diabetes or high cholesterol levels, so you can’t have cupcakes and donuts as often as you’re offered one. Maybe you struggle with food sensitivities, or you prefer to stick to a vegan diet for ethical reasons.
