Sadly, that’s not always an option, so the next best thing is to try and ease your pain with medication, physical therapy, chiropractic care and massages, or hot/cold treatments.

You can also use psychological techniques to better manage the pain you’re experiencing, from visualizations and progressive muscle relaxation to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Finally, you will find practical ways to live well with the pain, so you can still engage in hobbies you love and spend time with people who uplift you. Making small adjustments, such as pacing yourself, using assistive devices and setting realistic goals, can also make a big difference in your daily functioning.

But chronic pain doesn’t just affect the body — it hurts your emotional wellbeing too. The frustration and sadness that come with persistent pain can be overwhelming. Finding healthy ways to express those emotions is essential, whether that’s talking to a trusted friend, joining a support group or seeking therapy. Journaling can also be a powerful outlet, helping you process emotions that might otherwise feel too heavy to carry alone.
